Summer is almost at an end so our thoughts gravitate toward our mid-year getaway or annual holiday. We are all aware of the excessive costs of last minute flights but when is the right time to book travel?

After a bit of research (because that is one of the things that we do) we have found some “Magic Numbers” on the best time to pre-book your flights, bearing in mind that sometimes booking too early can also see you pay a premium.

  • Europe: 151 days prior
  • Asia: 129 days prior
  • The Caribbean: 101 prior
  • Mexico: 89 days before prior
  • Latin America: 80 days prior

Some websites to go to for great deals are:

Don’t forget going direct to the airlines can also snag you some great deals and your Personal Concierge usually has contacts within the travel industry which could see you better the deal even further or just save you the time and hassle of researching and booking it yourself.

When it comes to accommodation the options are endless and for the budget conscious there are many alternatives.

Backpacker Hostels –  these days are not just for the young, they offer an opportunity to mingle with other travellers and hear about things that may not be in your travel guide. Generally located in central hubs they should not be discounted as a place to stay. While staying in a hostel in Europe I met a diverse range of ages and backgrounds and got some great tips on free walking tours and affordable places to eat.

Airbnb  – another great option, locals renting out a room, their apartment or house to earn some extra money and meet travellers. I have used this service and it is fantastic. Great if you like a personal touch to your holiday instead of sterile hotel lobbies and want more than just a bed.

There is also the option of relocating a RV, this can save you quite a few $$$. Available in Australia, New Zealand and the USA, you not only get a vehicle free of charge, they supply the fuel as well, now that is what I call a holiday!

Lastly there is House Exchange. If you don’t mind sharing your home and maybe even your vehicle with someone you have never met (other than on a Skype call) then this could be for you. Some swaps are for a couple of months or longer, where would you like to explore?
