We are currently doing a large declutter job for a client who lived in times when things were harder than they are now. A time where there was little waste and a use for everything until it was worn thin or broken beyond repair.
Consequently everything was saved, tins, plastic containers, sachets and cutlery from fast food outlets. Her children’s shoes & clothes from their youth, toys & games and the list goes on……
The concept of repurposing and minimising waste is a great idea, if it is followed through with and items are actually passed on for others to enjoy and utilise.
Where it falls down is when things are stored in spare rooms, garages, sheds and around the home to deteriorate and become no longer practical, due to fashion changes, expiration or functionality.
So before you keep or store something ask yourself:
- Have you used or seen it in the last 12 months?
- What is the outcome of disposing of it now?
- Does it have an expiry timeframe?
- Do you have room to store?
- Do you still need it?
- Is it really useful?
- Does it serve its purpose properly?
- Are you keeping it ‘just in case’?
- How often do you use the item?
Things to also consider are items of clothing deteriorate over time, elastic doesn’t last and unless stored correctly fabric can get infested with insects.
Off-site storage is expensive and your possessions are a victim to the elements, plastics can become brittle and/or melt.
Dust and mildew can damage furniture and other household items. Technology becomes out of date and cassette tapes, videos and CD’s should be stored in temperature controlled environments to preserve their lifespan.
Remember to always dispose of items in the correct manner and deliver to the proper recycling facilites.
