Are you a victim or cosmetic chaos? Are there products in your car, handbag, gym bag, work drawer/locker and your bathroom?
When was the last time you checked the expiry dates on them and are you aware that by using products past their use by date can cause can serious skin and eye infections?
Products should be kept in a cool and dark environment as light exposure affects some of the ingredients and reduces their shelf life and most are extremely sensitive to heat. An ideal spot for makeup is in a fridge in a easy to remove basket or air tight container this will preserve their longevity.
Are you also aware that your brushes for hair and makeup collect dead skin, dust, hair and bacteria and should also be cleaned and maintained regularly. Sponge applicators should be cleaned every couple of days or discarded after each use.
Here is a quick guideline for some of the more popular used cosmetic products and their shelf life:
- Foundation and powder – 2 years
- Mascara – 1 year
- Eyeliner, pencils and eyeshadow – 1 year
- Lipstick, lip gloss and pencils – 2 years
- Nail polish – 2 to 3 years
- Hair products – 2 years
- Sunscreen – 2 years
- Perfume – 2 years
- Body and face creams – 2 to 3 years
Gather all your products from all the locations you keep them together in groups e.g. eyes, lips, face, body, hair, nails, brushes and so on. Check for expiry dates and if you can’t find one chances are it is waaayyy past it.
Now if there are items that are close to expiry make sure you use them first of ditch them completely. Wash all makeup and hair brushes with a small amount of shampoo and rinse them thoroughly, then squeeze as much moisture out as you can then leave to dry completely before using again.
Only have touch up items in your handbag or this is a great use for sample sized items that you may have collected. Keep all your groups of cosmetics and products in small containers so you can see at all times what you own and what you need to buy.
